Alberta’s Job Paradox: More Jobs, Higher Unemployment

Alberta is grappling with an unusual employment trend: more jobs but a higher unemployment rate. Despite creating 12,800 new jobs in August, the province's unemployment rate jumped to 7.7%, its highest since 2017, excluding the pandemic period.

This paradox can be attributed to Alberta’s population boom, with newcomers from Canada and abroad flocking to the province in search of work. While Alberta's economy is still growing, job creation is not keeping pace with the influx of new residents. The situation has intensified competition for available positions, especially among new entrants like youth and recent immigrants, straining the local job market.
