Alberta Unveils Historic Water-Sharing Agreements Amid Drought Concerns

Alberta has forged what it describes as its largest water-sharing agreements in 118 years, aiming to address the escalating drought concerns across the South Saskatchewan River Basin. Announced last Friday, these landmark agreements target major water consumers within the Red Deer, Bow, and Oldman River sub-basins, areas critical to the water supply of cities like Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat. Under the new framework, participating municipalities will cut their water usage by 5 to 10% from expected summer levels. This initiative reflects a strategic response to multiple dry years and predictions of drier conditions ahead, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable water management practices in the region.
