Angelina Jolie's 'Maria' Captures Callas as an Icon, Not a Woman




In Pablo Larraín's new drama Maria, Angelina Jolie stars as legendary opera singer Maria Callas. The film, written by Steven Knight, captures Callas in her final days in 1977 Paris, mixing scenes from her past with imagined interviews and visions. While visually stunning and full of witty dialogue, Maria is criticized for portraying Callas as an unreachable icon rather than a nuanced human being. 


The focus on her romance with Aristotle Onassis detracts from her own accomplishments, making parts of the film feel more like soap opera than grand opera. Despite its beauty, the film lacks the emotional depth found in Larraín's previous works.
