B.C. Woman Awarded $907,000 After Pothole Fall Outside 7-Eleven

Crystal Tommy, 37, has been awarded $907,000 in damages after a 2018 incident in which she tripped on a pothole in a 7-Eleven parking lot in Smithers, B.C., causing a severe ankle injury. The B.C. Supreme Court found 7-Eleven Canada liable for her injuries and subsequent health complications, including a hernia and other surgeries.

Despite 7-Eleven's denial of responsibility and claims that the pothole was not a significant hazard, the court ruled in Tommy's favor, citing insufficient evidence of the company's safety measures. The compensation includes amounts for future loss of income, pain and suffering, and housekeeping costs.
