For three days, Lesa Lowery watched helplessly as a fraudster hijacked her Facebook account, scamming her friends out of thousands of dollars. Despite reporting the issue, Meta, Facebook's parent company, did nothing to stop the crime. The scammer impersonated Lowery, claiming to sell belongings due to an elderly parent moving into long-term care.
"I felt really bad for everybody whose money was taken," said Lowery from Sussex, N.B. The scammer offered enticing items like hot tubs and trucks, fooling Lowery's friends. Unable to access her account, Lowery could only see the fraudulent posts, not the messages exchanged with the scammer.
