British Columbia has announced regulations to provide minimum wage and basic protections for app-based ride-hailing and delivery workers, effective September 3.
These regulations, a first in Canada, result from years of stakeholder engagement and address key worker concerns, including low and unpredictable pay, tip protection, and lack of workers' compensation.
The new rules set a minimum wage of $20.88 per hour for engaged time, 20% higher than B.C.'s general minimum wage. They also ensure 100% of tips go to workers and establish a vehicle allowance. Labour Minister Harry Bains emphasized the importance of fair pay and protections for these workers.
