California Fast Food Workers Demand Higher Minimum Wage Amid Rising Costs

California fast food workers, represented by the California Fast Food Workers Union (a branch of the SEIU), are demanding another minimum wage increase, aiming for $20.70 per hour by January 2025. This comes just months after a previous wage hike to $20 an hour. Their demands also include job stability, fair back pay, and investigations into alleged abuses like wage theft and hazardous conditions.

While some workers applaud the wage increases, many fast-food franchises have cut jobs and hours due to rising labor costs, leading to concerns about the industry's sustainability amid higher operating expenses and automation trends.
