Canada Considers Joining AUKUS Alliance, Eyes Nuclear Submarine Acquisition

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced Canada's consideration of engaging with the AUKUS alliance, a defense collaboration initiated by the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Australia in 2021, primarily aimed at developing nuclear-powered submarines for Australia. This exploration aligns with Canada's strategic interest in bolstering its defense capabilities, particularly to safeguard sovereignty in the Arctic region. This announcement coincided with the unveiling of Canada's defense policy review, emphasizing the enhancement of sovereignty in the North through significant investment. However, the review stops short of meeting NATO's two per cent GDP spending target, projecting an increase in military expenditure to 1.76 per cent by 2030, including investments in submarines, long-range missiles, and early-warning aircraft.
