Canada's Fertility Rate Hits Historic Low: Exploring the Causes Behind Fewer Children

Canada has recorded its lowest-ever fertility rate of 1.26 children per woman in 2023, marking a continued decline over the past 15 years. Contributing factors include rising living costs, eco-anxiety, and a cultural shift towards valuing personal fulfillment over larger families. Many individuals are delaying parenthood, resulting in fewer children.

As a result, one-child families now represent 45% of households with children in Canada. Experts warn that a persistent low fertility rate could lead to a "low-fertility trap," making it harder for future generations to see parenting as an attainable or desirable goal.
