Canada Sees Lowest Fertility Rate in History, Echoing Global Trends

Canada’s fertility rate hit a record low of 1.26 children per woman in 2023, placing it among "lowest-low" fertility countries such as South Korea, Spain, and Japan, according to Statistics Canada. Ten provinces and territories, including British Columbia, which had the lowest rate of one child per woman, recorded their lowest birth rates in history.

Experts attribute the trend to economic instability, high housing costs, and delayed parenthood, with more women freezing eggs or giving birth later in life. The number of premature births also reached a 50-year high, partly due to the increasing age of new mothers.
