Canadian Armed Forces Deploy to Jamaica for Haiti Peacekeeping Training Mission

In a significant display of international cooperation, 70 members of the Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed to Jamaica to train troops from the Caribbean in preparation for a peacekeeping mission in Haiti. This initiative, named Operation HELIOS, aims to bolster the Haitian National Police's efforts to restore stability amidst escalating gang violence. The training, focusing on peacekeeping and combat first aid, will involve military personnel from Jamaica, Belize, and the Bahamas, under the umbrella of CARICOM. With Haiti facing a "cataclysmic" security situation, marked by rampant violence and human rights abuses, this multinational force, endorsed by the United Nations and led by Kenya, seeks to provide much-needed support. Canada, while contributing financially, will not be sending troops directly to Haiti but has been actively involved in evacuating Canadian citizens from the crisis-stricken nation.
