CRA Confirms Tenants Not Liable for Non-Resident Landlords' Taxes

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) clarified that tenants won't be responsible for taxes owed by non-resident landlords. This follows online confusion about tenants needing to withhold and remit taxes on rent paid to landlords abroad. Minister of National Revenue Marie-Claude Bibeau assured on X (formerly Twitter) that the CRA doesn't intend to collect unpaid taxes from tenants. This follows a Tax Court ruling last year that caused misconceptions. Bibeau emphasized that the law hasn't been enforced on tenants in the past decade. The CRA typically deals with landlords regarding rental income and rarely involves tenants unless in exceptional business-related cases. Bibeau plans to work with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to ensure the law is clear and fair.
