Eastern Ontario Captivates Thousands with Solar Eclipse Spectacle

Eastern Ontario witnessed a momentous solar eclipse on Monday afternoon, captivating thousands who gathered in various communities to experience the celestial phenomenon. Notable viewing events drew over 5,500 spectators to Fort Henry in Kingston and attracted large crowds in Brockville and Cornwall, despite the day's cloudy conditions. Ottawa, enjoying a partial eclipse, also saw significant gatherings. Enthusiasts Paul and Annemarie Switzer, experiencing their second total solar eclipse, described the event as "almost spiritual." The eclipse, a rare occurrence with the last one visible in Canada in 1979, prompted school closures across Ontario. Noteworthy was the attendance of elected officials and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, among the hundreds who celebrated this astronomical event. The eclipse's path of totality, offering a two to three-minute complete solar coverage, graced cities from Kingston to Cornwall, despite some cloud interference. With higher seasonal temperatures and clear skies, the conditions were nearly ideal for this awe-inspiring spectacle.
