Fourplexes: The "Missing-Middle" Solution to Canada’s Housing Crisis?

Angela Jiang, who moved from a high-rise condo to a fourplex in Toronto’s midtown, enjoys the residential feel and bright balcony of her new home. Fourplexes, seen as a “missing-middle” solution between large apartment buildings and single-family homes, are gaining support. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $4.4 billion in federal funding to address Canada’s housing crisis, with conditions favoring fourplexes. British Columbia supports the plan, but Ontario and Alberta oppose mandatory implementation. Despite government backing, developers are hesitant due to profitability concerns. Toronto architect Tom Knezic believes fourplexes can creatively enhance affordability, but widespread adoption remains slow.
