GM to Lay Off Over 1,000 Employees in Software and Service Units

General Motors (GM) announced it will lay off over 1,000 salaried employees across its global software and service units, with about half of the cuts occurring in the United States. The automaker stated that these layoffs are part of efforts to streamline operations and prioritize key investments.

The decision follows the departure of Mike Abbott, former executive vice president of software and services, in March due to health reasons. Abbott, a former Apple executive, was hired in 2023 to lead GM's software development amid its push towards electric vehicles and subscription services. The cuts are not related to cost reduction efforts.
