Google Reverses Course: Third-Party Cookies Will Stay on Chrome

In a surprising decision, Google has announced that it will not be phasing out third-party cookies from Chrome as previously planned. Instead, the company is shifting towards a consent-driven privacy model that allows users to choose between tracking cookies, Google's Topics API, or a semi-private browsing mode.

This change has sparked controversy, as critics argue that it prioritizes Google's business interests over user privacy. The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority and Information Commissioner have expressed disappointment and concern. Meanwhile, digital advertising advocates have welcomed the decision, citing potential competition impacts. The debate highlights ongoing tensions between privacy and profit.
