Google Shifts Carbon Strategy: Ends Carbon Neutral Claims and Aims for Net-Zero by 2030

Google has ceased purchasing cheap carbon offsets and no longer claims to be carbon neutral, aiming instead for net-zero emissions by 2030. Previously, Google offset its emissions from buildings, data centers, and travel by buying carbon credits. The tech giant's new strategy focuses on reducing actual emissions and purchasing carbon-removal credits for residual emissions, a more costly but verifiable method.

In 2022, Google committed $200 million to support the carbon-removal market. This shift reflects a broader trend among companies like Microsoft and EasyJet, which are increasingly prioritizing direct emissions reductions over offset purchases to meet stringent climate goals.
