McDonald’s Halts AI-Powered Ordering Assistant Pilot

McDonald’s will end its AI-powered ordering assistant pilot with IBM by July 26, removing the technology from about 100 stores nationwide.

The “Automated Order Technology” allowed customers to interact with an AI assistant at the drive-thru. Despite the conclusion of this two-year partnership, McDonald’s executive Mason Smoot indicated future exploration of AI voice ordering solutions remains a possibility.

Other fast food chains, including White Castle and Wendy’s, are also experimenting with automated ordering. The technology aims to reduce staffing costs and enhance service speed and accuracy, though it currently faces challenges like understanding accents and background noise.
