Quebec Distillers Face Uncertainty as SAQ Plans to Cut Local Spirits

Samuel Gaudette, at Comont distillery in Quebec's Eastern Townships, transforms locally grown corn into agave sprite and gin using juniper berries, Labrador tea, and prickly ash. His products are sold through Quebec's government-owned liquor stores, the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ).

Facing a crowded market and declining sales, the SAQ plans to cut up to 200 local spirits, worrying producers like Gaudette. Calls are growing for direct sales to consumers, restaurants, and festivals to sustain the industry. Despite selling from their facilities, producers share significant sales with the SAQ. Expanded sales channels are essential for the industry's survival.
