Quebec Mandates Online Publication of Gas Prices to Boost Transparency

Quebec plans to boost gas price transparency by requiring stations to report prices to the government, which will publish them online. Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon announced this alongside a study by economist Robert Clark, suggesting regulatory changes to lower gas prices, especially in regions like Capitale-Nationale, Gaspésie, and Côte-Nord.

The government will implement mandatory online publication of gas prices and remove the "floor price" on gasoline, which prevents large companies from undercutting smaller ones. Fitzgibbon believes this will help consumers find cheaper options and increase market competition.

However, Pierre-Olivier Pineau from HEC Montréal argues that removing the floor price won't affect consumer prices and suggests reducing fuel demand through carpooling and public transit. Simon Bourassa of CAA Québec supports the measure, noting that mandatory price reporting could help consumers find better deals.
