Shell Canada has approved the Polaris carbon capture project at its Scotford refinery in Alberta, set to capture 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually by 2028. This equates to 40% of the refinery's emissions and 22% from its chemicals complex.
The project, supported by new federal investment tax credits, also includes the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub in collaboration with ATCO EnPower, providing permanent underground storage for captured CO2. Polaris follows Shell’s Quest project, which has stored nine million tonnes of CO2 since 2015. The initiative aligns with Canada’s emission reduction targets, leveraging federal and provincial incentives to advance decarbonization.
