Shift in Retirement Perceptions Among Young Canadians, Survey Finds

The traditional view of retirement at age 65 is increasingly seen as outdated among younger Canadians, with 74% of those aged 24 to 44 challenging this norm, a Leger survey for Wealthsimple Inc. reveals. Younger generations favor a flexible approach that blends work, travel, and personal passions rather than a straightforward march to retirement. This shift comes amid tougher economic realities, with many lacking access to workplace pensions and other traditional retirement supports. About 41% of respondents aspire to retire before age 55, driven by desires to engage in entrepreneurial or creative pursuits, reflecting a broader shift towards valuing life over work.
