Air Canada Apologizes After Attempt to Stow National Chief's Headdress

Air Canada has issued an apology after an incident involving the headdress of Assembly of First Nations' National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. Prior to a flight, airline staff attempted to stow the headdress in the cargo hold, leading to a tense situation. Woodhouse Nepinak, who usually carries the headdress with her, resisted the move, resulting in support from fellow passengers. The airline later returned the item to her cabin after she voiced her concerns. Air Canada acknowledged the cultural significance of the headdress and is reviewing its policies to ensure respectful treatment of sacred Indigenous items. Federal officials have expressed dismay over the incident, emphasizing the need for respectful handling of Indigenous cultural symbols.
