Canada's Agriculture Ministry Under Fire for Inadequate Climate Policies

Canada's Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-food faces criticism for its ineffective climate strategies, as reported by Environment Commissioner Jerry DeMarco. In a revealing assessment, DeMarco highlights the ministry's failure to develop a credible plan to cut emissions from nitrogen fertilizers, a plan that collapsed after being targeted by a disinformation campaign led by opposition figures in 2022. The report underscores that existing agricultural policies have achieved only two percent of the sector's 2030 emission reduction goals. Agriculture, contributing about 10 percent of national emissions, has seen a nearly 40 percent increase in pollutants over three decades, exacerbated by greater crop production and fertilizer usage. The commissioner's findings call for urgent, measured action to align with other governmental efforts and to address this critical sector's impact on climate change effectively.
