The Aamjiwnaang First Nation in Sarnia, Ontario, has declared a state of emergency due to dangerously high levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, detected during a chemical plant shutdown nearby. Readings from a monitor on April 25 showed benzene levels as high as 191.3 ug/m3, significantly above the provincial annual average limit of 0.45 ug/m3. The spike is linked to operations at the INEOS Styrolution plant, which is currently addressing a mechanical issue. In response, Chief Christopher Plain has advised residents feeling unsafe to seek alternative housing, arranged through the band office. The community and INEOS are taking steps to manage the situation, with ongoing oversight from environmental authorities.
